Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extraction Treatments in Swampscott MA

Like many dental offices our goal is to avoid tooth extraction unless it is absolutely necessary. Before a tooth extraction we will look for alternative treatments including fillings, root canal treatments, and dental crowns. But there are some cases where a tooth extraction is simply the only option. For example, if your goal is to get All-On-4 dental implants any remaining teeth will need to be removed. Likewise, if a tooth is severely decayed and cannot be restored, tooth extraction and tooth replacement treatments will be necessary. If you have questions about restorative dental treatments, please keep reading or give our office a call.

Types of Tooth Extraction

There are two main types of tooth extraction options for patients: surgical and non-surgical. For teeth that are already visible, the common method for removing them is a simple extraction. Our team will number the area and carefully pull the tooth. The treatment is done in a single appointment, and recovery is relatively straightforward. But if a tooth is underneath the gums, you may need a surgical extraction. This is most common for wisdom teeth. If a patient’s mouth does not have room for the wisdom teeth to come in, the teeth can become impacted. The teeth start to move at a steep angle and can collide with the adjacent teeth causing damage. Impacted wisdom teeth require surgical procedures so that the teeth can be removed. This treatment often requires multiple visits and has more complex post-care and recovery instructions.

What Do People Say About
Whiting Dental Arts?

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

For the most part, tooth extraction is avoided. A dentist’s goal is to preserve a patient’s natural, healthy smile. That said, there are a few instances in which a dentist will recommend tooth extraction.

Children's Tooth Extraction

On rare occasions a dentist might recommend that a primary tooth (baby tooth) gets pulled if it is not coming out naturally on its own and it is blocking the progression of your child’s healthy adult teeth.

Severe Decay

When a patient comes in with a serious toothache, abscess, or other infection, a dentist will see whether or not the tooth can be saved with treatments like root canals, if the tooth cannot be saved it will need to be pulled.

Cracks/Breaks/Chips

Sometimes physical damage to a tooth is purely cosmetic and can be treated with dental veneers or cosmetic treatments. Other times treatments like dental crowns can replace part of the tooth while saving the rest of the tooth. But in some cases, serious damage to a tooth can require that it gets pulled.

Preparation For Implants

Full mouth dental implants or implant-supported denture treatments like All-On-4 dental implants often require that patients have all the remaining teeth pulled so that the implants can be installed. This is usually the first step in the process after the initial consultation, exam, and measurements.
