What Are CEREC Same-Day Crowns?

What Are CEREC Same-Day Crowns?

Dental crowns are frequently used for dental bridges, root canals, and to replace the chewing surface of a tooth. Traditionally, dental crowns are done over the course of multiple dental appointments. That is because the crowns would need to be fabricated at an off-site dental lab after the initial measurements are taken. It can take days to weeks for the crown to be delivered and for the patient to have the appropriate time to have the crown installed. But luckily, modern technology like CEREC same-day dental crowns, allow patients to get crowns installed in a single appointment. Here at Whiting Dental Arts, we utilize the most modern state of the art technology for dental services. What Are Dental Crowns Used For?

Simply put, a dental crown is used to replace the top of a tooth. This can be for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, chewing on hard objects like ice or putting pressure on your teeth can lead to cracks. In order to save the tooth, a dental crown will be placed on the surface of the tooth. Additionally, procedures like root canals sometimes require crowns to be added to replace the surface of the tooth that was removed for the root canal process. Additionally, dental bridges usually use crowns to anchor the false tooth to the nearby existing teeth.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Dental Crown?

Traditionally, a dental crown can take multiple appointments and sometimes two full weeks. At the first appointment you will have measurements done and potentially also receive other treatments like a root canal. The measurements are then sent to a dental lab that can manufacture and ship the dental crown to your dentist. Like with any items being delivered or mailed, there can be delays. Because of this, there is often a 1-2 week waiting period between the measurement appointment and the appointment where the crown is installed.

How Do CEREC Same-Day Crowns Work?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic. How it works is measurements are taken during your dental appointment, and a machine in-office creates a ceramic crown during your visit. This removes the need to wait for measurements to be sent to a lab and the time it takes the lab to manufacture and ship the crown. Instead the crown can be installed that day. That said the entire procedure can take a few hours. While it is much better than waiting weeks for a dental crown, it is important to understand that you will still need to block off time for the appointment.
