How To Take Care of Invisalign Aligners

Many people like Invisalign aligners for their discreet and transparent appeal. Plus, they’re removable. However, proper care and maintenance are essential to achieve optimal treatment results. If not cared for properly, they can affect your oral hygiene and may contribute to dental issues. That’s why you need to learn the do’s and don’ts of Invisalign aligner maintenance for a seamless and successful orthodontic journey.

Dos and Don’ts of Invisalign Aligners Care & Maintenance

If you don’t take proper care of your Invisalign aligners, they’ll be damaged and begin to discolor. Moreover, they can also become ineffective and uncomfortable. So, what should you do to keep your Invisalign aligners in perfect condition? Here are some tips on what to do and what not to do if you have an Invisalign aligner.

Dos for Invisalign Aligners Care

  • Clean your aligners twice daily, every morning and evening. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a clear, unscented antibacterial soap or Invisalign-approved cleaner.
  • Rinse every time you remove them. You need to remove them for meals, drinks, or oral care. Rinse them promptly with lukewarm or cool water to wash away saliva, food residue, and reduce odor.
  • Brush and floss before re-inserting to remove any food particles or plaque buildup.
  • Soak them daily or at least weekly in cleaning solutions such as Invisalign cleaning crystals or gentle denture cleaners.

Note: At-home solutions may include soaking in distilled white vinegar mixed with water. You can also use a 50-50 hydrogen peroxide and water solution, followed by thorough rinsing and gentle brushing.

Don’ts for Invisalign Aligners Care

  • Avoid hot water. Exposure to hot or even warm water can warp or distort the plastic aligners.
  • Do not use toothpaste, mouthwash, or scented/colored soap to clean your aligners. Toothpaste can scratch or cloud them. Colored or scented soaps may stain aligners or impart unpleasant tastes. Mouthwashes, especially colored or alcohol-based, can discolor or damage the material.
  • Never eat or drink (except water) while wearing aligners. Consuming food or beverages other than water can stain or damage them and increase the risk of decay.
  • Always use the case to store aligners when not in use. Use the protective case to avoid contamination, misplacement, or accidental damage.
  • Keep your aligners out of direct sunlight, hot vehicles, heaters, or anything hot.
  • Keep them away from pets, especially dogs. They may chew on them, causing damage or loss.
