Post-Op Care for Dental Implants

After-Care Recommendations for Dental Implants

Dental implants require a surgical procedure. When patients receive dental implants at our office in Swampscott, we will provide detailed post-care instructions to you so that you can heal and manage your recovery. Implants require multiple procedures as the implant has to be placed first, heal, and then the crown is attached at a later point. One important thing to consider is that you will need someone else to drive you home after the appointments, and you will likely need to pick a pharmacy so that you can get any recommended medications for your recovery. What Is The Process of Getting a Dental Implant

Here are the common steps for a dental implant:

  • Initial Consultation: Before we schedule surgery, we need to take measurements and discuss your goals. Our team will take X-rays, 3D images, and provide a full dental exam. With this information, we will create a treatment plan for you.
  • Potential Other Treatments: In some cases, a treatment plan will involve other treatments, including jawbone strengthening via site restoration treatments or tooth removal.
  • Dental Implant Surgery: Once you are ready for the surgery, our team will schedule your surgery. We will provide prep instructions before this appointment.
  • Healing: After the implant is placed, it needs to heal through a process called osseointegration, where the implant fuses with the jawbone.
  • Final Appointment: Once the implant is placed and has healed, the tooth is added to the implant.

Common Symptoms After Dental Implant Surgery

It is common to experience swelling of the gums and face, and bruising around the mouth. Some pain around the implant site is also common. Your surgeon may recommend pain medication and, in some cases, antibiotics after the surgery. Swelling, discomfort, and other sym.ptoms should decrease over time. If swelling or soreness gets worse over the course of a few days, you need to call your surgeon.

Eat Soft Foods

While your mouth heals from surgery, your oral surgeon will give you a recovery plan that includes temporary changes to your diet. Soft foods are recommended during the healing process.

Stitch Removal

Your oral surgeon may use stitches that dissolve on their own, but if they do not you will need to schedule a follow-up appointment to have your stitches removed.

How To Take Care Of Your Dental Implants

Whether you have a singular dental impllant or a full arch implant, you need to take care of it. A common misconception is assuming that because the tooth is fake, you no longer need to take care of it. You need to keep brushing and flossing to keep your teeth and gums healthy and prevent decay and infection. Likewise, you should still see the dentist regularly.
