What Do I Do If I Damage My Dentures

Denture Replacement in Swampscott, MA

Just like natural teeth, your denture can get damaged. If your dentures break, crack, or get damaged, it is important to call a local dentist as soon as you can to get help fixing or replacing your dentures. You should not wear them when they are broken, and you should not use DIY repair kits or household glues, which may be toxic. Instead, you should gather the pieces, keep them in water or a denture-soaking solution, and bring the pieces with you to a dentist’s office. Here at Whiting Dental Arts, we can take a look and provide professional repair or a replacement if necessary. Steps To Take When Your Dentures Get Damaged

Here are the quick dos and don’ts of denture repair and replacement.

What To Do:

  • Call A Dentist: The first thing you should do when you notice that your dentures are damaged is call your dentist to schedule an appointment. During the appointment, we will assess the damage and determine whether we can repair your existing dentures or whether you will need new dentures.
  • Gather the Pieces: If your dentures are broken into multiple pieces, you should bring all of them with you. Keep the pieces in either water or denture solution so they do not dry out.

What Not To Do

  • Wear Them: Do not wear damaged dentures as they can cause injuries and get more damaged. A small crack can turn into a larger break if it is not addressed.
  • Use Glue/DIY Kits: Do not use DIY denture repair kits, as most dentists do not recommend them. Likewise, do not try to use household adhesives like hot glue, as these can be toxic.

How Are Dentures Repaired?

If the damage to your dentures is small, like a chip or a small crack, we may be able to quickly repair the dentures with our own tools at our office. But if the dentures are severely damaged or broken, we will need to create new dentures. Either way, it may be a day or two before you have your new or repaired set of dentures that you can use on a daily basis. There are a few ways we can fix dentures. An adjustment includes making small changes to ensure that your dentures are safe to use and comfortable. A rebase involves replacing the pink acrylic base while keeping the teeth. We often recommend that patients have a backup set of dentures so if their primary set gets damaged, they can be used in the interim.

Is Denture Repair Covered By My Insurance?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for dentures and denture repair/replacement. That said, the extent to which they will provide coverage can differ from plan to plan. We recommend checking with your insurance provider and calling your dental office to make sure that they are in-network. They can help you understand your benefits and provide alternative payment options if necessary.
